Compulsory recycling bins in schools

Υποχρεωτικοί κάδοι ανακύκλωσης στα σχολεία

As mindsets change, schools are definitely responsible for cultivating the seed of awareness in young children…

Disposal of waste is one of the most complex and difficult problems facing our country, as well as any modern society and therefore, there is a need to change the strategy for their management, as well as to take all necessary measures, according to and the Union directives, in order to complete the saving of natural resources and to prevent the unfavorable from their disposal in the natural environment. Recycling as an alternative management system is described as the process of systematically collecting, dialogue and returning money from waste materials to the social and economic life cycle.

Thus, recycling in schools became mandatory according to the circular of the Ministry of Education, which calls on all Primary and Secondary schools to implement a recycling program and to obtain recycling corners.

A very good initiative, which raises the awareness of the school community on the major issue of recycling.

SELECTION AT THE SOURCE:

1.9.2022 compulsory separate collection of paper, glass, plastics, metals, batteries and food waste in schools (under the responsibility of the Municipalities)

1.1.2022 mandatory separate collection of packaging waste in 4 streams (plastic, paper, metal, glass):

  • within the buildings of the Municipality or other countries and facilities for which the Municipality is responsible for operation
  • sports facilities
  • playgrounds
  • nurseries
  • other municipal public gatherings

What does this mean;

It means that in each school unit, the students must have access to each separate waste collection, so that the waste that can be recycled is not disposed of in green bins from which they lead to Landfills (Landfills).

The initial goal is for each school unit to have different colors for the collection of different materials in specific parts of the school complex as follows:

  1. Brown bin for biowaste collection
  2. Yellow bin for collecting paper and printed material
  3. Blue bucket for collecting plastics and metals

In addition, school units are estimated to need to have bins for the collection of household batteries and small electrical and electronic devices, which will be searched by the respective collection systems.
